Artemisia Annua Extract Artemisinin--Malaria treatment
Artemisia annua, also known as sweet wormwood, sweet annie, sweet sagewort, annual mugwort or annual wormwood. It is widely distributed in the domestic provinces and has been a Chinese traditional medicine for a long time.
Artemisia annua extract is extracted from leaf of artemisia annua, the main active is artemisinin, the current value of artemisinin for malaria control has been recognized and accepted by humanity. World Health Organization has put artemisinin compound preparation as the drug of first choice against malaria internationally.
Research to develop anti-malarial drugs led to the discovery of artemisinin, a compound which is extracted from Artemisia annua, in the 1970s by Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, for which she shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone with an endoperoxide bridge and has been produced semisynthetically as an antimalarial drug. Especially for cerebral malaria and chloroquine resistant malaria, artemisinin has quick and low toxicity characteristics, World Health Organization has been called it as"the world's only effective treatment for malaria." Clinically proven that artemisinin and its derivatives don’t show the significant adverse reactions in particular.in the treatment of malaria.
Artemisia annua also has other functions. It can prevent, delay or help to cure cancer.
It also has anti-allergic propertiesby effecting mast cell degranulation. This makes artesunate a candidate for treatment of allergic asthma Artemisia annua possesses the capacity to produce high phenolic compounds, which result in high antioxidant activity.
